Dissolved in water, physiological saline or buffer solution, the solution is clear and free of insoluble substances. A plant agglutinin extracted from seeds such as beans and peas. It is a tetrameric globulin with a molecular weight of 102000. Each subunit contains 237 amino acid residues with a molecular weight of 25500, binding to one Ca2+and one Mn2+, and containing a sugar binding site. It can specifically bind to α - mannose and α - glucose (on cell membrane glycoproteins), with the binding site required to be the unsubstituted hydroxyl groups in the C-3/C-4 and C-6 of the α - D-mannose or α - D-glucose hexagonal ring. It has the highest affinity for mannose disaccharides and mannose trisaccharides connected by α -1,2 glycosidic bonds
