The easiest measurement of an insulating oil's fire resistance is fire point. A fully loaded transformer will have a fluid temperature of ~100 C. As long as system protection does its job, preventing overloads and promptly clearing faults, the 155 C fire point of conventional mineral oil provides good safety. However, when an installation exposes people and property, dielectric fluid needs to provide additional fire resistance in case other system protection fails to operate. To be classified as less-flammable, high fire point, fire resistant or IEC K-Class the fire point must be >300 C. FR3 fluid has the highest fire point of any fluid available today.
