Fluoxetine hydrochloride can be used for various types of depression, especially for depressive symptoms associated with organic diseases and elderly depression. It is also used for anxiety symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, depression, neurotic overeating, weight loss, and as an adjuvant therapy for smoking cessation.
Fluoxetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) suitable for treating various depressive disorders, including mild or severe depression, bipolar disorder, psychogenic depression, and depressive neurosis. The mechanism of action is to inhibit the uptake of serotonin by neurons from synaptic cleft, increase the availability of this neurotransmitter for practical use in the cleft, thereby improving emotional state and treating depressive disorders. Common adverse reactions include dry mouth, decreased appetite, nausea, insomnia, and fatigue, with a few cases showing anxiety and headache. Due to the long half-life of fluoxetine hydrochloride, patients with poor liver and kidney function or elderly patients should reduce their dosage appropriately. Children should follow medical advice when using it. People with a history of epilepsy, pregnant or lactating women should use with caution. If rash or fever occurs, the medication should be stopped immediately and symptomatic treatment should be given. Not suitable for use in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs); If necessary, this medication should be discontinued for 5 weeks before switching to monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
