If only sodium hydroxide is present, this desiccant cannot be used at higher temperatures, because sodium hydroxide can react with the most commonly used glass instruments in the laboratory (the main component is silica) and corrode the instruments. A small amount of methane produced in the laboratory can be co-heated with soda lime and sodium acetate (sodium acetate) to generate sodium carbonate and methane.
