A*ithromycin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria.
A*zithromycin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, eye infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.
A*zithromycin is from a group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. Macrolide antibiotics work by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.

A*ZITHROMYCIN (az ith roe MYE sin) treats infections caused by bacteria. It belongs to a group of medications called antibiotics. It will not treat colds, the flu, or infections caused by viruses.

What is A*zithromycin used for?
A*zithromycin is an antibiotic that is commonly used for the following infections caused by certain bacteria.
- Lung infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
- Throat infections (e.g., pharyngitis, tonsillitis)
- Sinus infections
- Skin infections
- Ear infections in children
- Certain sexually transmitted infections
- Infection that affects female reproductive organs called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Certain infections in people with HIV/AIDS
A*zithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as bronchitis; pneumonia; sexually transmitted diseases (STD); and infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat, and reproductive organs. A*zithromycin also is used to treat or prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection [a type of lung infection that often affects people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)]. A*zithromycin is in a class of medications called macrolide antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Antibiotics such as a*zithromycin will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
