Celecoxib is a COX-2 selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to treat the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute pain in adults, painful menstruation, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in people .
Fuction of Celecoxib
Celecoxib is used for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute pain, musculoskeletal pain, painful menstruation, ankylosing spondylitis, and to reduce the number of colon and rectal polyps in people with familial adenomatous polyposis.It may also be used in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who are older than two years of age and weigh more than 10 kg (22 lb).
For postoperative pain, it is more or less equal to ibuprofen. For pain relief, it is similar to paracetamol (acetaminophen).And in osteoarthritis, acetaminophen is the first line treatment.In knee and hip osteoarthritis, acetaminophen may be ineffective.
Application of Celecoxib
Celecoxib is an anti-inflammatory compound from the diaryl heterocycle class that selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) (IC50s = 22.9 and 0.05 μM for COX-1 and COX-2, respectively). While it was initially hailed as a major therapeutic advance in treating inflammation while circumventing the gastrointestinal toxicity associated with traditional non-sterodial anti-inflammatory drugs, the use of celecoxib has been tempered due to its ability to induce adverse cardiovascular events. Celecoxib also displays chemopreventive activity in multiple tumor types via proapoptotic effects that are independent of its capacity to block COX-2.
