Machine Screw
| Type: | Machine Screw |
| Definition: | Machine screws are typically designed with finer, more accurate threads than alternative fastener types. They are generally intended for use with a pre-drilled interior tapped hole or a nut. Machine screws are most often used for fastening metal parts securely together in various types of machinery or construction. |
| Description: | Machine Screws are usually threaded to preexisting holes. One significant difference between the machine screws and tapping screws is that the machine screws are typically used in threaded holes. But like most other types of screws available in the market, these can create a hole when you drive them into the material. Machine screw dimensions are given with two numbers separated by a dash. The first number indicates the screw's diameter the second indicates thread pitch. A screw labeled "3/8 - 16" will have a diameter of 3/8 of an inch, with 16 threads per inch. Machine Screw has Nominal Diameter, Pitch, Pitch Diameter, Minor Diameter, Thread Angle and Thread Length, they have to be confirmed before the start of production. |
| Application: | The two most commonly used machine screw types have either coarse or fine threads. Coarse threads are better suited to quick and dirty applications, while fine threaded screws are better for precise products. The most common types of machine screw head shapes are pan head, flat head, round head, oval head, truss head and hex head. While round heads are probably used most often, flat heads are particularly useful when the screw needs to be flush with the surface it's screwed into. |
| Others: | The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) defines machine screws as featuring a diameter of up to 0.75 inches. They can be smaller than 0.75 inches in diameter, but they can't be larger than this size. |
