Trichloromethane, chemical formula CHCl3, is an organic compound, also known as chloroform, colorless transparent liquid, has a special odor, sweet taste, high refractive index, non-combustible, density greater than water, volatile. It is the product of three hydrogen atoms in the methane molecule being replaced by chlorine atoms. Sensitive to light, it will react with oxygen in the air when exposed to light, and gradually decompose to produce highly toxic phosgene (carbonyl chloride) and hydrogen chloride. When stored, 1% ~ 2% ethanol can be added as a stabilizer. It can be miscible with ethanol, benzene, ether, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide and oil, etc. Because of its unique physical and chemical properties, the compound is widely used in different fields such as industry and medicine.
